This section is our introduction, but we do not want to make such an insensible suggestion by saying that you should read it first. Rather, it would be our wish for you to enjoy reading the main section on the records review totaling 860 albums. Feel free to think ofthe Introduction as something to read when you happen to remember it.The term “rare groove,” in the first place, is believed to trace its origin back to the early 1980’s club music scene in London. Some D.J.’s - famous Norman Jay, Jazzy B. and others dug up and played mainly Afro-American music (including the rare pieces) that had been buried and forgotten for a long time, and they gave the name "Rare Groove" to their repertory.Rare groove started out by spotlighting the sound sources which no one would take notice of.(Note that rare groove today has somewhat changed from the way it was before.)It was not limited to Afro-American music for a piece to be called rare groove. As long as the music had a nice feeling of dancing, any song (e.g., jazz, rock, Latin, Brazilian, andAfrican music, etc.) was considered a candidate for “diggin’ ” for rare groove. A similardiggin’ took place in parallel for sample sources in the hip-hop world in the U.S. at aboutthe same time. However, the purpose of the sample source diggin’ in the hip-hop worldwas more inclined to look for “usable” parts when composing new music rather thansearching for sound sources. It is certain that rare groove and hip-hop sounds had a veryclose relationship due to the fact that those hip-hop sounds were played by the D.J.’s inEngland, along the same lines as rare groove.Then the acid jazz movement took place from the late 1980’s to the 1990’s. It was a movement which was a mix of danceable jazz to reevaluation of funk and what's gained popularity were the bands and units that created a rare groove-like sounds. That was also the time when a wide range of recognition involving other fields such as fashion was gained through this movement. By that time, the term “rare groove” was spread out and its nuance changed to refer to a kind of taste in the sounds (“rare” also means raw). Along with hip-hop music’s world-wide popularity and familiarity of rare groove through its usage as sample sources, the definition of rare groove in the original sense has reemerged in conjunction with the climax of the recent deep funk scene. (This also started in England. The popularity may be attributed to the fact that the 45 rpm single record market was chosen and that this market had some room left to explore.) The funky and cool sounds and records with a distinctive accent that are a little differentfrom so-called hit songs – Would this describe the general definition of rare grooveat present To begin with, rare groove was once danceable sounds for D.J.’s and clubmusic fans, but now it has gained a wider range of enthusiastic listeners. Besides thesong-based evaluation, instances of evaluation of albums have increased. Enthusiastsand specialists existed in the conventional soul and jazz world and many of these types ofpeople are also part of the rare groove scenes today. Would it be too much to say that itscultural formation is evolvingIn contrast with the historically approved authentic evaluation of Afro-American musicand jazz, we believe that rare groove has been recognized as an alternative value reorganizedfrom the contemporary perspective.Next we would like to illustrate some characteristics of this book. First of all, this book isan overview catalogue of rare groove albums (single records are not included) at present.As we believe that keeping each album in its original form is very important, we used theoriginal artwork as much as possible.
